Mumbai: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has registered a decisive victory in the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly elections, securing 23 seats and leading in another 23, bringing their tally to 46, according to the Election Commission. The party had already won 10 seats unopposed, ensuring a stronghold in the state’s political landscape.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein were among the victorious, retaining their respective seats. With the majority mark set at 31 in the 60-member Arunachal Assembly, the BJP’s dominant performance solidifies its position in the state government.
The National People’s Party (NPEP) secured one seat and is leading in four others, while the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) is leading in two seats, and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in three. Independent candidate Wanglam Sawin won the Khonsa seat.
Celebrations erupted outside the BJP office in Itanagar as supporters rejoiced at the prospect of the party retaining power in the state.
Reflecting on the 2019 Assembly elections, the BJP had won 41 seats in Arunachal Pradesh. The Janata Dal (United) secured seven, the National People’s Party (NPP) five, Congress four, and the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) one. Two independents also won seats, but all except former Chief Minister Nabam Tuki of Congress later joined the BJP.
This victory underscores the BJP’s growing influence and the electorate’s confidence in their governance in Arunachal Pradesh.
